Feeding the Lombard Beast!

Whoa! It’s cold this morning.  We woke up to about 38* outside…  We gotta get out of here before we freeze to death…  Hopefully we make through the big event here at the museum in Oct!

The Maine Forest and Logging Museum at Leonard’s Mills has the one and only, fully functional, fully legal, fully inspected, fire fueled, steam powered log hauler in the whole country.  Read more here.  There are many other log haulers around, but they’re not fully legal to run like this one.

At the end of this short video you’ll see the log hauler on the right.  I have been promised that when we fire up this bad boy on Oct 6&7 for the living history days that I’ll get to drive it! Oh Yea!!

After all the loads of logs I’ve delivered to feed this beast I deserve a little treat, right?!

Mr. Lombard, the inventor of this machine, is also the inventor of the lag tracks (now used by tractors and tanks around the world) and also invented the system for applying power independently to the drive tracks.  It was nearly impossible to steer until he made this modification.

Take a look.
