Avalanche!

We’re sitting in a nice Cabela’s parking lot in Spokane Valley, Idaho, right on the Idaho/Washington border.  Cabela’s makes it really nice for RV’ers.  We’ve got a free dog kennel, a free dumpstation and a nice long RV’er parking space.  I like Cabelas and its FREE!  We looked around for RV campgrounds, but they are all booked up around here and for 50 bucks a night you basically get a parking lot… I’ve got more space here at Cabela’s and did I mention it’s FREE!?

Well, it was a great week in Glacier Naitonal Park!  I just heard that a forest fire started the day we left the park and it was fairly severe.  Tourists were evacuated, rangers are trying to find and evacuate backcountry hikers, somebody’s car was torched, the Going to the Sun road was mostly closed down (we drove that road many times).

Elite

(I keep meaning to get some bailing wire to tie that muffler up off the ground so it will stop sparking… but all my bailing wire is holding on the RV’s rear bumper right now!)  Ha! No!  We didn’t start the fire! (Billy Joel, 1990’s?).  In other news;  Another local grass fire on the news last night was started by a cyclist… who stopped to “take care of business”… and then, to be environmentally friendly, thought it best to burn the tissue paper before burying it… but the flaming paper got into the grass… which then started a pretty big grass fire!  I’m sure there is a lesson there somewhere.

While we were still in the GNP, though, there were no wildfires.  After Logan’s Run we did a couple of shorter day hikes.  My Plantar Fasciitis is still pretty painful, but I can do a few miles without pain, I just pay for it in the middle of the night!  Ouch!

One of the first hikes we did was Avalanche lake.  It starts from a trailhead along the Going to the Sun Road.  Its about 5 miles round trip.  It was a nice cool day and started to sprinkle on us on the way back.  We had flashbacks of Logan’s Run and got a little nervous, but this was just a mild rain.

We made it to the lake and it was gorgeous of course.  Pure, clear water.  You can see sunken logs in the lake and waterfalls in the mountains behind.

On the way back we were feeling so good and the weather was so nice and cool that I challenged Tina to a trail run back to the car.  The hike into the lake was almost all uphill so the run back was almost all downhill.  It was an easy 2 mile run on the trail, pushing people out of the way, tripping on rocks.  Although it seemed like we were making great time, Tina’s garmin said we only averaged a 14 minute mile.  We did have to stop a lot for people on the trail and there were some uphills that slowed us down, but it felt like it was mosly fast downhill…  Well it was fun anyway, but boy did my feet pay for it later!!

Along the trail there were cool waterfalls!

Neat forested areas… this picture doesn’t show it, but the forest had a magical glow to it, like a scene from a LOTR movie …  Rivendell maybe?

And of course the lake and waterfalls…

We could do that hike again!

  1. You should start a “Go fund me” site. Your stuff is better than most of the stuff I see on TV, and actually entertaining instead of depressing.

  2. A lot of people I know are talking about your blog. You are becoming quite famous in our little circle.

    1. Great! I’m gonna start charging then… Maybe I could sell autographed selfies.. I need to start funding some of this fun!
