I purchased the Wilson Cell Phone Amplifier last year knowing we’d be hitting some weak cell signal zones on our travels.
I can’t tell that it has helped a lot, but I do know it has helped in a couple of weak signal areas, so I am glad I got it.
When I installed it last year I just plugged it in and stuck the antenna on the roof, but I decided to read the instruction manual this week (I promise guys, I do not make a habit of this! ) and discovered that the outside antenna should be as far away from the inside antenna as possible. I didn’t know that. So I spent a little time this week rewiring and hiding the wires on this device and moving the outside antenna further back on the roof of the coach.
Now the antennas are about 20′ apart which should help provide a little better boosting!
Needed to move the outside antenna anyway since it fell onto my slide cover and punctured a hole the next time I reeled in the slide. Now it is further to the back of the coach and ulnikely to puncture anything.
I ran the cable from the outside antenna through the slide wall opening. There is plenty of room for this little wire and I don’t think the sliding will damage it.
On the inside I did have to drill a hole in the trim in the kitchen where the wire comes in. It’s not very noticeable, but I’ll do a little more touch up to hide it better. You can barely see the black wire in this picture poking out of upper trim then into the overhead cabinet. There was just no way to run that wire directly into the overhead cabinet from outside without potentially creating a water leak. This is good enough.
From there I mounted the booster electronics box in the overhead cabinet and connected all the wires in this cabinet (outside antenna, inside antenna, and power).
Notice the power plug back there? There was only a single plug for the microwave originally. Before we left I converted it to a standard dual plug and also tapped an additional plug from that which I mounted underneath this cabinet. It’s tucked away behind the paper towel holder and designed to supply power to my Keurig, or other stuff!
Next I drilled holes up high in the cabinets that run to the front of the coach. I mounted the inside antenna (which gives you the boosted signal) up near the front of the coach where we spend a lot of time…
Here’s the black wire running inside the cabinets at the very top hidden away from an outside view.
Here is the antenna stealthily placed on the wall, almost invisible…
can you find it?
Cell phone signal boosters… Cool!
Janet…one of your mom’s gal pals. I’m enjoying your travels around the country and am learning so much. I’m especially to at last know the location of “hog heaven”.
Yep.. We found out! 🙂
